Executive Director Helen Raine talks to Tricia Allen of Hōʻike TV about the ʻalae ʻula
Executive Director Helen Raine recently spoke with Tricia Allen of Hōʻike Kauaʻi Community Media about the endangered ʻalae ʻula, a native Hawaiian waterbird found only on Kauaʻi and Oʻahu.
With fewer than 1,000 birds remaining statewide, Helen discusses the major challenges facing the species, including habitat loss, introduced predators, and human disturbance, as well as the ongoing conservation efforts working to protect remaining populations.
The conversation also highlights ways the community can help support ʻalae ʻula recovery — from protecting wetland habitats and responsibly managing pets, to reporting sightings through eBird and helping raise awareness about Hawaiʻi’s native waterbirds.
Mahalo to Hōʻike Kauaʻi Community Media for helping share the story of the ʻalae ʻula and the importance of conserving Hawaiʻi’s unique native wildlife.
